The Rock or Mad or Wild or Cliff honey is produced from the indigenous honeybees of high Himalayas. Apis laboriosa also called giant bee is a wild bee and makes their colonies cliff over hangs on Rocky Mountains. These bees collect nectar and pollen from wild flowers that are found in high Himalayas. Thus, honey of Apis Laboriosa bee is most indigenous and medicinal one. Honey is harvested only by the high skilled professional honey hunters climbing the rock mountains with the ladder made by ropes. This type of honey is harvested twice in a year. This honey is taken only half or one small tea spoon per day. More than this is risky to take as it can halogenate and make person unconscious too. Honey is harvested twice in a year. The first harvest is during November/December and second harvest is during March/April. Hallucinogenic property of Apis laboriosa bee honey differs as per the season it is produced. Harvested during November/December is the mild one and the one which is harvested during March/April is the strong one. Hallucinogenic property is higher at the time of harvest and decreases over time. But the medicinal values do not decrease, it remains same over time. The pure wild honey has no expiry date but its taste and colour may changes with the storage and time. Usually this honey is consumable for 2 years.
In Nepal wild honey is harvested in the central, western and far western region of the country. Basically we deal with the honey harvested from Lamjung and Rukum district that are situated in the western part of the country. The place of harvest is 2500 to 3500 meters height.
